GRADING, DESCRIPTION AND ABREVIATIONS

(FDC): FLEUR DE COIN. Used to define top grade coins, but really only applies to pieces in mint state, having no flaws or surface scratches. Usually reserved for proof coins. The word 'Proof' should not be used to denote a coins condition. Proofs are pieces struck on specially prepared blanks from highly polished dies and usually have mirror like finish.
(BU): BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED This is used to describe coins still in the state in which they left the mint, and which have never passed into general circulation, dispaying what is known as 'Full Mint Lustre'.
(EF): EXTREMELY FINE
This describes coins which have been put into circulation, but have received only the minimum of wear. There may be a few slight marks or minute scratches in the field, but otherwise the coin should show very little sign of having been in circulation.
(VF) VERY FINE
Coins in this condition show some amount of wear on the raised surfaces, but all other detail is still very clear.
(F): FINE
In this grade coins show noticeable wear on the raised parts of the design; most other detail should still be clear.
FAIR & POOR
Fair. A grade that is applied to very worn coins which still have the main parts of the design destinguishable, and Poor which denotes a grade in which the design and rim are almost flat and few details are discernable.
ADDITIONAL DESCRIPTION
There are always likely to be differences of opinion as to the exact grade of a coin. In all matters of condition it might be said that the grade is in the 'eye of the beholder', Thus adding letters such as N (Nearly), G (Good), meaning slightly better than the grade to which the letter is added. A (About or Almost), this has been used over the last 10 to 15 years or more, to describe an uncirculated coin, usually copper, bronze and brass, that has lost a little of its lustre: ABU. In case where a coin wears more on one side than the other, two grades are shown, the first for the Obverse, the second for the reverse GVF/EF. Any major faults not apparent from the use of a particular grade are often described seperately. These include dents and noticeable scratches, discoloration, areas of corrosion, edge knocks, holes, on otherwise good quality pieces and the like.
