In November 1965, artist and master sculptor, Arnold Machin RA, began work on an extraordinary image of Queen Elizabeth. Though he couldn't have Known it at the time, he was creating nothing less than a national icon - an image so fine and so functional that it has appeared on every British definitive stamp since 1967.

By its fortieth anniversary in June 2007, it had appeared on at least 200 billion stamps, and production is still in full spate today.
