The great public interest and enthusiasm for the commemoration of the golden jubilee of the Easter Rising did not transfer to acceptance of the new coin. The coin, in time, began to be withdrawn from circulation and in the end about 1,250,000 of the coins held by the Central Bank were melted down in 1971 at the time of Decimalisation.
