Twice European Footballer of the Year (1972 and 1976) and voted Best European Player of All Time in 1990, Franz Beckenbauer's achievements and influence are unrivaled. Combining brilliant tactics with immense skill, he was renowned for his ability to turn effective defence into attacking advantage. Indeed, he invented the whole concept of the attacking sweeper. His career opened with SC Munchen in 1954 ; he joined Bayern Munich in '58, and between '65 and '77 he won a German record of 103 caps.
