Cook grew up in a small village near Middlesborough, and learnt his trade journeying up and down the coast from the Tyne to the Thames. He later joined the navy, and in 1768 was appointed commander of the Endeavour. The ship was to take astronomers to the Pacific to record Venus passing in front of the Sun - a rare event that can be used to trace the distance of the Sun from the Earth.
