In 1986 a new circulating coin series in brass-nickel and copper-nickel was introduced which replaced the old types. The coins in this 1987 collection have been struck in BU-Brilliant Uncirculated quality, with a limit issue of just 50 000 sets. Is the second time that such mint year sets are issued by the Portuguese State Mint in 1987.
The new circulating coins were designed by the Portuguese sculptors Mr. Euclides Vaz (20 and 50 escudos) and Mr. Helder Batista (1,5 and 10 escudos).
