With this silver ECU, Spain commemorates the development of shipbuilding in Europe. The reverse portrays a Castilian ship of the 13th century. The original for the design is a drawing in the famous codex Spain, 1996 Official 5 ECU 'Castilian Cog' (1 Ounce Silver) "Verses for the Blessed Virgin Mary" written by King Alfonso the wise.
The obverse shows a type of ship called a cog which appeared in Northern Europe at the beginning of the 13th century.
