UNO - the United Nations Organisation - was founded in the 1945 in the course of a conference lasting several weeks in San Francisco. The world's most important international body its Charter was signed by 52 nations and entered into force on October 1945. By the middle of 1994, it had risen to 184. UNO's objective is to secure world peace through communal opposition to wars of aggression and the use of force.
Belgium commemorated the 50th anniversary of UNO's foundation with this issue of an ECU bearing a portrait of King Albert II.
