THE PORTRAIT GALLERY CELEBRATES 150 YEARS.
Opened in 1856, the national Portrait gallery in London is a tribute to a proud and confident age. Great Britain was the centre of a worldwide Empire and its people had achieved remarkable things in many fields. The Victorians respected these achievements, believed in public education, and were keen ao gathering and classifying. So it was natural that they should want to form a public collection of portraits of Great Britain.
