EUROPEAN FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP '96 "Villa Park" Royal Mint Issue Silver Medal, Proof FDC

£39.00

EUROPEAN FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP '96 Villa Park, Royal Mint Issue Silver Medal.

The finely engraved motif shows the stadium and the club emblem of Aston Villa, one of our oldest and most successful football clubs. The history of this club is closely connected with the development of the game of football. Aston Villa was founded in Birmingham in 1874. At this time, football was still very similar to Rugby, which is why one half of the game played by Aston Villa against St Mary's Rugby Club was played according to the rules of Rugby, the other according to the rules of the "Football Association", which are still basically valid now. Aston Villa was one of the twelve teams which formed the first football league in the world in 1888. Villa's fame was enhanced by them being the first team to do the double, winning the league and the cup in the same season. Villa Park Stadium, the club's venue, is just as famous. It is one of England's finest and best known arenas.
