North Yorkshire Moors Railway 1967 150th Anniversary of The Opening of The Whitby & Pickering Line in 1836 Silver Proof Medal in Capsule of Issue, FDC

£86.00

For the 150th Anniversary of the opening of the Whitby to Pickering Railway on May 26th 1836, this Sterling Silver Medal was issued in 1967 as the North Yorkshire Moors Railway became a Trust Ltd.
The NYMR is one of the earliest and most historic lines in the North of England. Its origins go back well over a century and a half, and were an important trade link between Pickering and Whitby. Following a meeting in 1831 George Stephenson was asked to report on building the line of simplest construction between Pickering to Whitby. The complete 24 mile stretch of line was fully opened in May 1836.In the 1950's traffic began to dwindle and by 1965 the line operated its last Passenger Service. Through a major fund raising scheme the line reopened in may 1975. The North Yorkshire Moors Railway became a Trust Ltd in 1967.
