The Royal Liverpool Golf Course at Hoylake has staged major tournaments throughout its long history, including Open Championships. Set on the Dee estuary and with the Welsh hills in the distance, it is one of the oldest links courses in the world and is undeniably beautiful. The golf course was built in 1869 and extended from nine to 18 holes in 1871. For the first seven years, it doubled as a racecourse as golfers shared the land with members of the Liverpool Hunt Club. In 1872, Liverpool Gold Club received royal patronage from Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught. This Commemorative medal struck in Sterling Silver weighs 20 grams and a diameter of 38.6mm crown size. The reverse depicts the 3rd green with the Royal Liverpool Golf Course clubhouse behind. Obverse features two Liver Birds supporting an outline map of the Mersey with the Royal Charter of 1207 in the background.
